[EARLY PHOTOGRAPHY]. Three-quarter plate daguerreotype of New York farmer and judge Benjamin H. Gorton III, his wife, and daughters.
A charming daguerreotype of a family identified as Benjamin H. Gorton III (1808-1869) and family. 6 x 5 in. (sight), housed in a flame mahogany-veneer ogee frame. (Some tarnishing to edges, occasional spotting; few spots to mat; unexamined out of the frame).
Here, Gorton sit with his hands crossed over his lap. His wife, Marian, sits opposite him, while their oldest daughter, Mariam, stands partly behind her father, and their youngest daughter, Sarah Elizabeth, sits in a miniature raised chair next to her mother. Benjamin and his wife are buried in Christ Church Cemetery, Sherburne, Chenango County, New York.
The identities of the subjects were discovered on an old typewriter note affixed to the back of the frame when it was discovered (not included here).
